WESTPORT, Conn., Jan. 2, 2018 — Edward Nusbaum, one of Fairfield County’s most recognized family law attorneys, today announced the opening of his new practice, the Law Offices of Edward Nusbaum P.C.
Nusbaum, who has been practicing family law in Westport for more than 35 years, along with attorney Harold Haldeman and their support staff, concentrate in divorce, child custody and parenting, alimony, child support, property division, post-divorce issues and jurisdictional issues. The offices will continue to be located at 212 Post Road West in Westport.
Nusbaum has been a Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent-rated attorney for 24 consecutive years. He also has been named a Connecticut Super Lawyers Top 50 attorney by Thomson Reuters. He has been rated Best Lawyers in America for 23 consecutive years and ranks among the top five percent of private practice attorneys nationwide.
In fact, in multiple cases Nusbaum has tried, the results have changed divorce law in the state of Connecticut. In one case, Bucy v. Bucy, 23 Conn. App. 98 (Connecticut Appellate Court, 1990), a client’s daughter received treatment for bulimia and anorexia, and the father refused to pay for the treatment. The father’s argument was the psychological services were not medical expenses because those services were provided by a psychologist and not a medical doctor. Therefore, the father claimed he was not obligated to pay under the divorce separation agreement.
The psychologist who treated the child, specialized in treating teenage girls with eating disorders. The court found that despite the fact the psychologist was not an MD, she possessed the appropriate credentials for treating eating disorders. This was the first case in Connecticut in which the treatment by a psychologist was recognized as a medical expense.
“This case was just common sense that had inexplicably eluded the court system for far too many years,” said Nusbaum. “I am very proud to have my name attached to this case.
“While excellence and peer recognition are very important to the legal profession, it is my philosophy that those skills shouldn’t overshadow other aspects of a lawyer’s responsibilities,” added Nusbaum. “A good attorney is more than his success as an attorney alone. Giving back to the community is just as important as one’s success in the courtroom.”
Nusbaum has been active in the community for more than 30 years; from coaching over 40 youth sports teams to being president of CancerCare of Connecticut and raising $500,000 for the organization. Nusbaum also was responsible for arranging a major sporting goods manufacturer to fully outfit all the athletic equipment for Paul Newman’s Hole in the Wall Gang Camp.
Nusbaum is a Fellow and past president of the Connecticut Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and is a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers, the leading organizations of family law practitioners. He also is a member of the Connecticut Bar Association’s Resolution of Legal Fees Dispute Committee.
